CAF Champions League: Siyethemba Sithebe backs AmaZulu for strong maiden campaign

AmaZulu are set to take part in the Champions League for the first time in the club's history when Benni McCarthy's charges square up against Malawian outfit Nyasa Big Bullets in the First Qualifying Round this weekend.

The Durban-based outfit qualified for the competition by virtue of a club-record second-placed finish in the DStv Premiership last season and will be looking to leave their mark on the continent's grandest stage with a strong showing.

"For me, we worked so hard to get there," Sithebe tells snl24.com/kickoff. "We want to progress to the group stages, we want to go to the semi-finals, we can also reach the final. I trust the coach, he is a good coach, he always has a plan and we have quality players. I think we can make it far."

If AmaZulu are able to emerge victorious from their two-legged tie against the Bullets, they will meet Congolese giants TP Mazembe in the Second Qualifying Round for a shot at a spot in the Group Stage of the competition.

Sithebe, who was recently named as Player of the Tournament following South Africa's triumph at the 2021 COSAFA Cup, also hopes to lift some silverware this season after missing out on the league title to Mamelodi Sundowns last time around.

"This coming season we want at least to lift a trophy," he adds. "The coach, and even us as the players, we told ourselves that as soon as the season starts, we are going to go for a trophy and we are going to compete in the league, then in the Champions League, we will go as far as we can. That is all possible this season."
