Downs’ edge over Pyramids

The CAF Champions League final first leg will get underway with Mamelodi Sundowns as overwhelming favourites to get past their Egyptian opponents Pyramids FC.

Sundowns face Pyramids at Loftus on Saturday (15:00) in the first leg to determine the winner of the ultimate football prize on the continent, which comes with USD4 million (approx. R71 million) for the champions.

The second leg of this final will be played on June 1 in Cairo, Egypt.

Firstly, bookmakers have placed Sundowns as overwhelming favourites to win the first leg.

Scanning across at least 10 betting houses who operate either online and/or have shops, the trend is the same with odds, with the Betway Premiership champions as favourites.

Victory for Pyramids will be considered an upset, which will pay triple as much compared to what is on offer for Miguel Cardoso’s team.

Reasons are plenty for why The Brazilians have been placed in this position and these include the fact that they conceded once in going past Esperance and Al Ahly in the quarterfinals and semi-finals.

In the two meetings between Sundowns and Pyramids in the past, it has been a draw and a win for the Chloorkop-based club.

Sundowns have gained all the experience needed for the Champions League with their latest appearance this year being their 18th since making their debut in 1994.

They were finalists in 2001 and won it in 2016, while with Pyramids this is only their second appearance in the Champions League.

The Egyptians reached the group stage last season and have been impressive in getting past AS FAR and Orlando Pirates to reach the final.
