Bafana brush Mozambique aside

Bafana Bafana registered a 2-0 win over Mozambique in an international friendly at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bafana featured a completely new starting line-up following Friday’s clash against Tanzania, with Hugo Broos giving debuts to Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Samukele Kabini and Yanela Mbuthuma.

The host looked to register first as Mohau Nkota came short to the six-yard box following a pass from Nyiko Mobbie and stung the gloves of Ivane Urrubal.

Urrubal continued to show force moments later and charged out of his area to parry a one-on-one from Relebohile Mofokeng after some good work by Mbuthuma.

It didn’t end there for the Mozambique shot-stopper, who seconds later narrowed space in the box and thwarted a close-range attempt from Sinoxolo Kwayiba.

Mofokeng attempted another effort on goal minutes to halftime, but once again saw Urrubal come up with the goods and parried his strike out for a corner-kick.

A substitution before the second period from the Mambas saw Shaquille come on for Jonathan Muiomo, while Bafana were unchanged at this stage of the encounter.

The dominant spell continued a minute into the second half as the host raced in front when Kwayiba nodded in a corner from Nkota on his first start under Hugo Broos.

Bafana pushed for a second goal moments later through a smart effort around the area by Nkota, but Urrubal produced strong reflexes and parried for a corner.

As the host enjoyed complete control, Broos decided to make a triple change by introducing goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner, Oswin Appollis and Ashley Cupido.

Cupido made his presence felt in the last 20 minutes when he pounced on a cross-field pass from Nkota and fired into the top-corner from the edge of the danger area.

The Mambas, who chased shadows for large spells, nearly got a consolation through a glancing header by Shaquille a minute from time but Leaner pulled an outstretched save, as Bafana managed to run down the final minutes to the end and emerged comfortable victors in the end.

Confirmed line-ups:

South Africa: Chaine, Mobbie, Sibisi, Mbokazi, Kabini, Le Roux, Mphangule, Kwayiba, Mofokeng, Nkota, Mbuthuma

Subs: Goss, Learner, Maswanganyi, Basadien, Mbatha, Appollis, Moloisane, Ndamane, Selepe, Cupido, Moremi, Van Rooyen.
