Hugo Broos revokes World Cup failure

Hugo Broos has again pointed his fingers towards Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye by referring to him as being 'stupid' for dashing Bafana Bafana's World Cup hopes.

Ndiaye was dubious in his handling of the World Cup qualifier away in Ghana last November which was won by the hosts courtesy of a controversial penalty awarded.

The Senegalese school teacher was then accused of match-fixing with SAFA laying a complaint with FIFA, which was eventually dismissed.

Ghana will now play in the World Cup Play-Offs qualifiers against Nigeria to determine one of five teams heading to Qatar later this year.

"We were so close because just a draw was enough, but the way Ghana treated us from the beginning of the game, very aggressive and okay very was good from their side and we didn't have an answer for that.

"We gave a stupid goal from a stupid referee.

"For the rest, we had to be stronger and therefore after that game we made an evaluation of the six games we played and therefore also the selection I have now is because we saw then that we needed something more to be better," said Broos on SABC during the Bafana Bafana squad announcement.

Since handling the game between Bafana Bafana and Ghana in November last year, the Senegalese official has had the whistle in four CAF games – three at the AFCON finals and one in the Champions League which was tie between ES Setif and Raja Casablanca a month ago.

CAF has not given him appointments in the last 32 matches played in the last two rounds of matches in both the Champions League and Confederation Cup.

With the World Cup dream off, Bafana now have two friendly games against Guinea and France in Europe late this month in preparation for the AFCON qualifiers.

"What we saw after the World Cup qualifiers is that we need stronger opponents. I'm told that in the past the friendly games were against teams like Botswana.

"No disrespect to Botswana but you learn nothing from those games because you are the better team, and you win, and everybody is happy. So now we have two games against the World champions and a Guinea that had a good AFCON tournament and from those games, we can learn a lot.

"The results are not important. If we lose two times it is okay but what we see and what we can evaluate out of those games is 10 times more than if you play against Botswana.

"You see immediately how good the players are and can be used for the next qualifiers. There is no excuse anymore because we have to go to Ivory Coast (AFCON) next year. This is for sure, so we have to be prepared," says Broos.
