SuperSport United goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has been backed to hold onto the Bafana Bafana number one jersey for many years to come by one of his teammates.
Williams played four of Bafana's five matches at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt and showed that there is no reason to doubt him at all, with solid performances in the competition. His SuperSport teammate, Dean Furman, was at AFCON too and feels the player has what it takes to hold onto the number one jersey.
Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper has been the number one goalkeeper for a number of years and has not featured in recent times due to a shoulder injury that has kept him out of action. He will no doubt be looking to making a return to the national team once he starts playing regularly at club level, but Furman has backed Williams to keep his spot and has explained why.
"Ronwen is an absolutely fantastic goalkeeper and there's no two ways about it. Confidence does not seem to be a weak part of his game. He comes for crosses, his distribution is absolutely fantastic, the way he talks to his team is great. He's got many great attributes to his game and he is a pleasure to play with," Furman says.
"I'm just happy for him that he is being recognised at Bafana level. He took his opportunity and I thought he was excellent at AFCON and I only see him getting better as he gets more experience at that level. We are lucky to have such a quality goalkeeper who really calms everyone down because we've got so much confidence in him. There's no panic in that department. I can see him being the number one for many years and I can see him holding down that jersey. We are very lucky to have him at SuperSport."
