Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has explained why Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has again found himself in the national team while his fellow clubmate Brandon Petersen has not been selected.
Bvuma has been selected amongst three keepers for the two friendly matches against Guinea and France later this month in Europe though he has played just thrice this season with his last appearance having come six months ago against Mamelodi Sundowns.
Since then, he dropped out of the squad only to then resurface on the bench late last year and has been deputising for Petersen this year at Chiefs.
"If you go to every club in the PSL you will find always a foreign keeper," says Broos speaking on television today.
"I think there are five or six South African keepers, and the rest are foreign. With those five we have to choose three good keepers for Bafana Bafana, so it is very difficult.
"Bruce has been there from the beginning, and he is there again but normally it should be Petersen, but he is injured. He (Petersen) was part of the squad but last week we got a phone call from the coach, and he said, 'forget it, Petersen is out'.
"So, it was Ronwen (Williams), (Veli) Mothwa, Bvuma, and Petersen. Those were the four teams in the selection. We have a South African, but he is out.
"Also, with age, you cannot say Bvuma is a young one. He is 26. You are young at 22 or 23 so Ronwen is 29 [30], Veli is 30 [31]. What is coming behind them?
"I'm happy that Bruce is now always on the bench (at Chiefs)," says Broos.
For all the Bafana Bafana call-ups that Bvuma has received since 2019, he is still yet to make his debut.
He turns 27 in May and has only ever played 28 games for Chiefs since making his debut five years ago.
