Bafana crash out of CHAN group stages

Bafana Bafana's African Nations Championship journey came to an end after a 3-3 draw against Uganda on Monday evening.

Coach Molefi Ntseki decided to make two changes from the draw with Niger, as Majadibodu and Tebogo Tlolane dropped to the bench, with Kwanda Mngonyama and Terrence Mashego being recalled to the side.

Both sides showed signs of looking to get an early goal, but it was Uganda who carved out the first chance when Karim Watambala latched onto Allan Olekllo's lay-off in the box but saw his shot saved by goalkeeper Samukelo Xulu.

Uganda eventually broke the deadlock in the on 32 minutes as Jude Ssemugabi finished off a lovely counter-attack by turning home a cross from Patrick Kakande.

Bafana, however, were unable to find a way back into the contest before the break although Keagan Dolly and Thabiso Kutumela remained a threat in the final third.

Ntseki's men got their reward in the 52nd minute after defender Ramahlwe Mphahlele volleyed home from close range after Uganda were unable to deal with a set-piece in the area.

Bafana then took the lead seven minutes later when a quick throw-in sent Kutumela clear down the right and the former Mamelodi Sundowns forward managed to squeeze the ball beyond the Ugandan shot-stopper for his third goal of the competition.

The South Africans thought they sealed the win in the final eight minutes after Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo took advantage of the Ugandan goalkeeper leaving the box and proceeded to find the back of the net with a composed strike from distance.

However, Bafana collapsed in the final few minutes after Okello converted a penalty in the 88th minute. Four minutes later, Uganda were awarded a second penalty after a VAR check and Rogers Torach stepped up and showed the composure to seal the equaliser and top spot in Group C.

South Africa, meanwhile, bow out of the competition after finishing third in the group.
