Benin coach: Normally, Bafana should lose three points

Benin national team head coach Gernot Rohr has voiced his frustration with FIFA over their ongoing silence regarding the eligibility controversy involving South African midfielder Teboho Mokoena.

Bafana Bafana could face a potential three-point deduction in their FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign after fielding Mokoena in their 2-0 win over Lesotho.

The Mamelodi Sundowns star had accumulated two yellow cards earlier in the qualifiers against Benin and Zimbabwe, making him ineligible to play in the match against Likuena.

Lesotho are believed to have filed a complaint with FIFA following the game, although reports from Nigeria have suggested the protest may have been submitted outside the permitted time frame.

Despite the incident, FIFA has yet to list the case amongst its ongoing investigations, raising concerns amongst other Group C teams.

Hugo Broos’ side currently leads Group C with 13 points, five ahead of both Rwanda and Benin, who are tied at eight points.

With qualification stakes high, the lack of clarity from FIFA has left Benin and other rivals in a state of uncertainty, and Rohr, in particular, is angry with FIFA’s silence.

"It is not normal that we don’t know the situation about the points on the log table before our games this week," said Rohr, per Score Nigeria.

"It is very, very strange. Normally, South Africa should lose three points, and they should go to Lesotho. But nobody knows why they (FIFA) did not take this decision."
