Bafana Ghana Senegal referee

What was billed as a match that would provide thrills was disappointingly decided by Maguette who handed the hosts a 'very soft' penalty that wasn't warranted after Daniel Amartey went to the ground at the slightest touch by Rushine de Reuck.

The national association is now counting on FIFA to order a replay just like they did four years ago in a match involving Bafana and Senegal when Ghana referee Joseph Lamptey was found guilty of match manipulation after making decisions on behalf of Asian betting syndicates.

Lamptey awarded a penalty and disputed goal in that match won 2-1 by Bafana with the result then scrapped with The Lions of Teranga winning the replay on their way to Russia.

"The match officials decided the game which is not what is supposed to happen so, we, as the association have decided that we will be writing to both CAF and FIFA to investigate how the game was handled and secondly to challenge some of these decisions.

"We have ticked all our boxes and will submit a full complaint which is supported by all the evidence which was there to say either that game was manipulated or the referees had done something wrong before that game. We are very disheartened by their action, and we can't leave it and let it destroy the players.

"We feel robbed because this is not an isolated incident of a penalty but there are a lot of decisions by the match officials and that is why we said we will get an expert so that we can get a strong case. We are looking at the precedence which FIFA set by ordering us to replay Senegal and we think if justice is to be served the same decision must be taken against Ghana," says Tebogo Motlanthe, the SAFA CEO.

Though Maguette has officiated in World Cup qualifiers, FIFA Club World Cup, CAF Super Cup, AFCON finals, Under-20 World Cup, Africa Nations Championship, CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup games he has attracted controversy in the past.

In 2019 he was the man in charge when ugly scenes erupted at the end of a CAF Confederation Cup semi-final second leg between RS Berkane and CS Sfaxien.

Sfaxien were infuriated with the officiating after suffering a 3-0 defeat which saw them lose 3-2 on aggregate with second assistant Seydou Tiama assaulted by the Tunisians.
