Striker Sergio Aguero's move to the Camp Nou could seemingly be the catalyst to keeping Messi at the Catalan club, with Laporta stating that the Argentina forward regularly urges the Barca captain to sign a contract renewal.
"We are doing everything possible to offer him a competitive team," the club president told Marca. "We have signed 'Kun' [Aguero], who reminds him every day at the Copa America that he has to sign so they can play together.
"We act with skill and ability to convince him. I am not contemplating [getting] a no [as an answer].
"I am optimistic. He wants to stay and we do what we can. It is not easy.
"He is still the best in the world and is coveted by other clubs that have greater financial potential."
The friendship between the two players is a good one, and Aguero, at his first press conference as a Barcelona player, revealed that he and Messi speak every day.
"We hope to play together, of course. But we have been negotiating for a long time, these are decisions that Leo will make with the club. It will be a pleasure and pride to play together.
"I have known him for a long time and I think he will stay."
