Ferran Torres rues 'offensive' Robert Lewandowski dig

A Spain star has apologised for making "offensive" comments about Poland and Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski.

Manchester City forward Ferran Torres has apologised for a statement he made ahead of Spain and Poland's Group E clash at the UEFA European Championships last week.

Speaking in a radio interview ahead of that match, the Spaniard was asked if he was worried about the prospect of going up against the Poland striker.

"No, he does not worry us," he answered at the time, according to the Daily Mirror. "Our central defenders will eat Lewandowski."

The 21-year-old added that the striker is someone he reveres, saying Lewandowski "has been a benchmark in terms of work, consistency and about knowing what you want".

However, the remark about "eating" the Polish forward was not well-received in certain quarters, with Torres suffering some backlash as a result, and he has since apologised.

"I respect Lewandowski and all the forwards very much," he said during a press conference, per Marca. "He is a reference for me. If I offended someone I want to apologise."

The Citizens star also discussed Spain's round of 16 tie against Croatia on Monday.

"The team is calm and working well, trying to achieve the objectives," he added. "The goal is a matter of time and in the end everything will pay off.

"We are calm from day one because we were working well and the reward had to come. We have to insist because on Monday we have a great final.

"It is going to be a very difficult match against the world runners-up. We are aware that we will have to work hard, and from there try to win."
