Artem Dovbyk scored a dramatic winner in the last minute of extra-time to secure Ukraine progression to the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory over Sweden.
Ukraine had the first good attempt of the match. Roman Yaremchuk played the one-two with Andriy Yarmolenko and found space in the box before unleashing a stinging drive goalwards with Swedish goalie Robin Olsen doing brilliantly to palm it away to safety.
The Eastern Europeans took the lead in the 27th minute. Yarmolenko curled one with the outside of his foot to the back post for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who smashed an effort towards goal which was too powerful for Olsen to keep out despite getting a hand to it.
Sweden almost equalised just three minutes later. Sebastian Larsson almost caught Ukraine keeper Georgi Buschan off-guard at his near post with an intelligent free-kick but Buschan managed to get to it just in time and tip it around the post.
Anderson's side did level matters with two minutes remaining of first-half regular time. Emil Forsberg found himself in a pocket of space on the edge of the box and let fly with his effort taking a deflection off Ilia Zabarnyi and flying into the back of the net.
After Forsberg struck the woodwork twice, Alexander Isak should have then scored for the Scandinavians when he was released clear on goal by an Albin Ekdal ball over the top, but he scuffed his effort and it bounced disappointingly wide.
The sides could not be separated as the match went to extra-time. The Swedes suffered a blow nine minutes into extra-time when Marcus Danielson was sent off for a horrible challenge on Artem Besyedin.
And just when the match looked as if it would be heading for a penalty shootout, Ukraine scored in the most dramatic of fashions in the 119th minute when Zinchenko delivered a superb cross into the box for Dovbyk to power his header into the back of the net.
England erased the pain of 1996 with a historic 2-0 victory over Germany at Wembley Stadium to progress to the Euro 2020 qurter-finals.
In the 16th minute, England built up patiently from the back and it was worked into Raheem Sterling, who cut inside from the left and curled one towards the far post with Manuel Neuer making a diving save at a rather comfortable height to keep it out.
Trippier's resulting corner was floated to the far post where Harry Maguire rose highest, but could not generate enough pace on the ball as Neuer had a routine save to make.
The pair combined once again from a corner and this time it was a better chance for the Manchester United centre-back but he failed to direct the header on goal when he should have at the least hit the target.
Five minutes after the interval, Robin Gosens crossed from the left with the ball being headed out by England to the edge of the box where Kai Havertz was waiting and he unleashed a powerful left-footed volley straight down the middle which looked destined for the roof of the net but it was magnificently tipped over the bar by Jordan Pickford.
Southgate brought on Grealish for Saka in the 71th minute and that seemed to make all the difference as the Three Lions took the lead just three minutes after his introduction. Kane played it to the Aston Villa man and he threaded one down the left towards the byline for Luke Shaw, whose cross was sidefooted into the back of the net by Sterling for his third goal of the tournament.
And then Grealish was at the forefront again for the second in the 86th minute. Shaw fed the playmaker down the left and his pinpoint cross on his weaker foot was headed expertly into the bottom left-hand corner by captain Harry Kane for a well-deserved goal to seal a historic victory.
