EURO 2020 round of 16 wrap

Italy defeated Austria 2-1 in extra-time for a spot in the Euro 2020 quarter-finals on Saturday evening.

Italy, who stormed through the group stages, targeted a quick start from a smart attempt on ten minutes by Leonardo Spinazzola but he dragged wide.

At the other end, the Austrians were in from a looping first-time effort by Marko Arnautovic but the lanky forward witnessed the strike fly over the top.

Italy provided more threats though following the half-hour mark with Ciro Immobile rattling the face of the woodwork with a dipping shot outside the area.

The Azzurri endured a tough start to the second half as Arnautovic came close with a low snap shot on the inside of the area before David Alaba drilled a close-range free-kick over target.

Austria slotted the ball in the net midway through the second half courtesy of Arnautovic, who headed in a cross from Stefan Lainer but it was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

Roberto Mancini's side came alive in the latter stages and nearly had the lead in spectacular fashion, but Domenico Berardi's speculative overhead kick went over the top.

It was the winger's last involvement, as he made way for Federico Chiesa and Andrea Belotti coming on for Immobile.

With extra-time in the picture, Italy claimed the breakthrough after Chiesa brought a diagonal ball from Spinazzola under control to arrow into the far corner.

Italy snatched a second goal in added time of extra-time through a snap finish from point-blank range by Matteo Pessina after Austria failed to clear their lines.

Austria pulled a goal back minutes to the end from a low header by Sasa Kalajdzic following a near post corner-kick, but it was too little too late as Italy advanced to the last eight.

Denmark progressed to the last eight of the UEFA Euro 2020 after thrashing Wales 4-0 on Saturday evening.

Gareth Bale looked to set matters on fire on nine minutes with a snap shot from a tight angle, but he went narrowly wide of the far corner after going on a darting run towards the area.

Denmark were first to break the deadlock midway in the first half after Kasper Dolberg cut in from outside the area to curl into the bottom-corner with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) approving.

The Danes targeted a second goal in quick succession through the self-same Dolberg, but he was unable to execute a low-cross field ball from Damsgaard.

A groin injury on Connor Roberts five minutes before halftime had him withdrawn and Neco Williams introduced, whilst the frustrations grew for the Welsh stall.

Denmark doubled their lead two minutes after the break after Dolberg pounced on a poor clearance from Williams to apply a clever bottom-corner finish.

Joe Allen looked to hand Wales a comeback with a long-range shot from outside the area, but he went over the top while Martin Braithwaite nestled the post following a header across goal by Mathias Jensen.

Denmark made it three after Joakim Maehle brought down a cross-field delivery to cut inside before he picked out the top corner two minutes from time with a left-footed strike.

Wales were reduced to ten players as Harry Wilson picked up a straight red card for a rash challenge Maehle.

The Danes added a fourth in additional time after Braithwaite strayed clear off the last man to bring a low pass from Andreas Cornelius under control to find the near corner.
