Euro 2020 Round of 16

Belgium knocked holders Portugal out of Euro 2020 with a 1-0 victory in Sevilla on Sunday to progress to the quarter-final stage.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos made two changes with Diogo Dalot and Palhinha coming into the side. Belgium coach Roberto Martinez made five alterations with Toby Aldeirwereld, Jan Vertonghen, Thomas Meunier, Thorgan Hazard and Youri Tielemans being brought into the starting lineup.

Diogo Jota really should have done better when Renato Sanches played in the Liverpool attacker in the sixth minute but he dragged his shot badly wide of the left-hand upright as Belgium breathed a sigh of relief.

Belgium centre-back Thomas Vermaelen handled the ball on the edge of the box in the 25th minute. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and hit an effort towards the left corner which swerved and dipped, forcing Thibaut Courtois into a fine save diving to his right.

In the 37th minute, Meunier cut inside from the right flank after being played in by Kevin de Bruyne and curled one just wide of Rui Patricio's goal to the left.

The Red Devils opened the scoring in the 42nd minute. Meunier played a diagonal from right to left to Thorgan Hazard, who took a touch inside before slicing across a right-footed strike into the bottom right corner.

Jota had another good opportunity on the hour mark, which he again failed to take. Ronaldo surged forward with a powerful run before feeding Jota, who turned Vertonghen well but proceeded to blaze his effort over the crossbar.

The Seleccao came close twice in quick succession in the 82nd and 83rd minute. First, Ruben Dias' powerful header straight at Courtois from point-blank range was brilliantly palmed up and away to safety by the Real Madrid goalkeeper. And then Raphael Guerreiro's guided half-volley hit the bottom right upright after Belgium only managed to clear to the edge of the area.

And thanks especially to some fine goalkeeping from Courtois, the number one-ranked side in the world advanced to the last eight.

Czech Republic advanced to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over the Netherlands, who had defender Matthijs de Ligt sent off, in Budapest on Sunday.

Frank De Boer made only one change to his Netherlands side with Ryan Gravenberch replaced by Marten de Roon in midfield. Czech Republic made three alterations with Jan Boril, Vladimir Darida and Jakub Jankto dropping to the bench and being replaced by Pavel Kaderabek, Petr Sevcik and Antonin Barak.

With eight minutes gone, Netherlands took a corner short and Donyell Malen delivered into the box with it met by De Ligt at the far post but the angle was very tight and he could only flash his header across the face of goal.

Soon after, Denzel Dumfries bent his run to escape the offside trap and tried to beat Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik at his near post but it was blocked by defender Tomas Kalas.

The Czechs crafted their first opportunity in the 22nd minute when Sevcik whipped in an excellent ball from the right with West Ham midfielder Tomas Soucek getting across his marker at the near post but glancing his header wide of the far post.

In the 54th minute, De Ligt was sent off for denying Patrik Schick a goalscoring opportunity at goal as the last man with the initial yellow card overturned by VAR as the world's fourth-most expensive defender in history saw red.

And Jaroslav Silhavy's side made the most of their numerical advantage in the 68th minute when they took the lead. A deep corner was headed back across goal by Kalas towards Tomas Holes, who powered his header home past three Dutch defenders on the line.

Czech talisman Schick made it 2-0 in the 80th minute to grab his fourth goal of the championships. Goalscorer Holes turned provider when he dispossessed Netherlands captain Wijnaldum deep inside the Netherlands half of the pitch and then raced into the penalty area, before squaring it across goal to Schick, who slotted the ball clinically past Maarten Stekelenburg in the Oranje goal.
