EURO 2020 match report Italy v Switzerland 16 June 2021

Alessandro Florenzi was the only absentee for Italy from the opening day win over Turkey, as Giovanni Di Lorenzo entered whilst Switzerland made no changes from the draw against Wales.

Italy nearly managed to get off the mark through the head of Ciro Immobile after ten minutes following a floating ball into the area from Leonardo Spinazzola, but the Lazio forward went over.

Captain Giorgio Chiellini provided the opener from a corner-kick ten minutes later from close-range, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) noted a hand and disallowed the strike.

It was the evergreen stalwart's last involvement as a hamstring pull following four minutes had him removed and Francesco Acerbi introduced.

This didn't affect the Azzurri who instead pulled clear after two minutes when Manuel Locatelli ran unattended into the area to tap home a cross from Domenico Berardi.

Spinazzola was close to give Italy a second closer to halftime from a tight angle with a snap attempt following a loose pass, but he went wide of the far side.

Haris Seferovic became the Swiss side's first substitution at halftime, as Vladimir Petkovic introduced Mario Gavranovic.

Italy still took full control and doubled their advantage through Locatelli, who netted a brace with a low bottom-corner finish from outside the area.

The Swiss started to ask questions of the Italians midway in the second half with Steven Zuber and Breel Embolo, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma smothered both.

Petkovic's men remained on a tight rope and conceded a third minutes before time as a powerful shot outside the area by Immobile proved too strong for goalkeeper Yann Sommer, as Roberto Mancini's men became the first team to advance to the knockout stage.
