England have been dealt a major blow ahead of the 2020 UEFA European Championship after Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced to withdraw from the squad through injury.
Alexander-Arnold has pulled out of the England squad after sustaining a thigh injury during the Three Lions' 1-0 pre-tournament friendly win over Austria on Wednesday evening.
"Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of UEFA Euro 2020," the Football Association said. "The Liverpool player sustained a thigh injury in the closing stages of Wednesday's 1-0 win against Austria in Middlesbrough.
"A scan on Thursday confirmed the 22-year-old will be unable to play in the forthcoming tournament so he's withdrawn from the England squad to return to his club for rehabilitation."
The injury occurred when the Liverpool full-back pulled up short in the dying stages of the encounter after effecting a clearance in his defensive clearance, and he had to be assisted off the pitch by the team's medical staff.
His condition was then assessed on Thursday morning where scans found that he had suffered a grade two quadriceps tear, which will see him sidelined for between four-to-six weeks, according to The Athletic.
While the 13-cap defender's absence will be a major loss for England, manager Gareth Southgate is blessed with an abundance of quality in the right-back position, with Kyle Walker, Reece James and Kieran Trippier all already present in the squad.
However, Alexander-Arnold, who was named in the FIFA FIFPro Men's World 11 last year, will now have to be replaced in the squad, with Southgate expected to choose from Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White.
England have been drawn in Group D at Euro 2020 alongside Croatia, Scotland and Czech Republic, and get their campaign underway against the Croatians on Sunday, 14 June.
