How I Became a Goalkeeper - Musa Langa

In our exciting feature How I Became a Goalkeeper, KickOff speaks to former AmaZulu FC and African Wanderers goalkeeper Musa Langa.

At Usuthu Langa, who is now a qualified goalkeeper coach, played alongside the likes of Francis Shonayi, Kamaal Sait, Edries Burton, Elasto Lungu, Wonder Ngcoya, Simon Magagula and Gavin Lane.

"I have never played any other position except goalkeeper. I was inspired by the likes of Mark Anderson and Patson Banda.

"From a young age playing in the streets, I always chose to stand in goals.

"I think I was eight years old at the time.

"But what helped me the most is knowing the late Henry Cele, he used to stay in my neighbourhood. He inspired me.

"Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane is the one who took me to AmaZulu."

Who are some of the goalkeepers you looked up to?

"Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs goalkeepers Patson Banda and Moses 'Skebhe' Khenyeza."

Who are some of the goalkeepers today, who are your favourites?

"At the moment, Ronwen Williams, Ricardo Goss and Veli Mothwa are doing very well. There is also Sipho Chaine from Orlando Pirates.

"But still, none of them is a match to the legendary Itumeleng Khune.

"What sets Khune above the rest is talent and development. Remember, he and the late Senzo Meyiwa were fortunate in their development; on top of that, goalkeeping was a God-given talent to them.

"It's easy for a goalkeeper coach when he works with people who have a God-given talent compared to somebody who just has a passion in goalkeeping."
