Club confirms Quinton Fortune's new deal in LALIGA

South African football icon Quinton Fortune has officially signed an contract extension with a LALIGA club.

Fortune has been serving as a coach in the backroom staff to Real Oviedo boss Veljko Paunovic since March 2025.

In his short time at the club, Fortune has already played a role in a historic moment — Real Oviedo secured promotion to LALIGA this season after winning the promotion playoff final in June.

This marked the end of the club's 24-year absence from Spain’s top flight.

As a result, the club has been widely praised for their inspiring return to the Spanish elite, led by 40-year-old captain Santi Cazorla.

Moreover, the coaching staff have received major credit for the remarkable achievement, and it seems Fortune has been specially rewarded for the role he has played so far.

According to Real Oviedo's official website, head coach Veljko Paunovic has secured an extension to the end of the 2025/26 season along with his coaching staff which consists of Fortune, Claudio Arzeno, Nuno Miguel Gomes and Alberto Martínez once more, while Jesus Unanua returns to become the club's goalkeeping coach again.

This season could mark a breakthrough moment for the former Bafana Bafana player, as it is his first coaching role in senior men’s football within one of Europe’s top five leagues.

The 48-year-old, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, has previously worked at Chivas in Mexico, as well as in several smaller roles in the United Kingdom with Manchester United, Cardiff City, Reading, and the England youth setup.
