Liverpool cement top spot with Ipswich thrashing

Liverpool 4-1 Ipswich Town

Premier League leaders Liverpool cruised to a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town  at Anfield on Saturday evening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Andy Robertson, Ibrahima Konate, Alexis Mac Allister and Coady Gakpo were restored, with Virgil Van Dijk making a landmark 300th appearance.

Liverpool hit the front in the 11th minute courtesy of a powerful 20-yard effort by Dominik Szoboszlai as the visitors failed to crack back.

Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah doubled the lead not long afterwards through a thumping strike in the roof of the net after meeting Gakpo's cross.

Gakpo switched up the roles a minute to halftime when he pounced on a rebound effort and dispatched from close proximity.

The Dutchman got a brace later on after combining with Alexander-Arnold's incisive cross to head in from point-blank range.

Ipswich had a consolation in the dying stages when Jacob Greaves rushed in the box to meet a corner and nodded in, but the day belonged to the table-toppers.

Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal got back to winning ways to go second on the table with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Captain Martin Odegaard missed out due to illness and replaced Ethan Nwaneri, but William Saliba returned from injury as Wolves remained unchanged from the loss to Chelsea.

Arsenal ended the half with ten players when an untimely challenge by Myles Lewis-Skelly were shown a red card for upending Matt Doherty.

The host were reduced to less personnel too after a lunging tackle by Joao Gomes on Jurrien Timber saw a second yellow and subsequent red card issued.

Given the even numbers, the Gunners seized initiative when Riccardo Calafiori found space in the box and slammed in Gabriel Martinelli's cross.

Southampton 1-3 Newcastle United

Newcastle United came from behind earlier on to overcome rock-bottom Southampton 3-1 and redeemed themselves from last weekend's drubbing by Bournemouth.

Key change for the host saw goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale ruled out and Alex McCarthy restored, whereas Fabia Schar relegated to the bench for Sven Botman on the side of the Magpies.

The bottom-placed Saints took just ten minutes to get going when Jan Bednarek rose on the end of a cross in the box and head in emphatically.

Newcastle got a route back though in the form of a perfectly struck penalty by Alexander Isak after a foul in the box and went on to his brace not long thereafter.

Italian international Sandro Tonali made it three a few minutes in the second half with a clever finish from Anthony Gordon's pass.

Brighton Hove Albion 0-1 Everton

Everton's strong start under the returning David Moyes continued courtesy of a gruelling 1-0 win over Brighton Hove Albion.

Tariq Lamptey and Gruda entered from the Seagulls impressive win at Manchester United, with the Toffees making no changes to the personnel that started against Tottenham Hotspur.

Following a cagey spell, the clash lightened up when the Toffees earned a spot-kick from a hand-ball by Joel Veltman and saw Ilimane Ndiaye step up to find the net.

AFC Bournemouth 5-0 Nottingham Forest

Dango Ouattara stole the show with a hat-trick that guided AFC Bournemouth to a resounding 5-0 victory over Nottingham Forest.

Dutchman Justin Kluivert got the breakthrough in the opening stages with a stunning strike into the bottom-corner having drove up a couple of yards.

The host grabbed a second when Dango Ouattara managed to meet a pin-point delivery from Kluivert and headed in smartly.

Ouattara helped himself to a brace towards the closing quarter when he ran in the channels to get a goal-sight and finished with aplomb.

The Burkinabe's fruitful outing continued and bagged a hat-trick with a simple finish before Antoine Semenyo rounded it up through a smart effort across the face of the target.

With the loss, Forest lose a bit of ground with the pace-setters and now trail the high-flying Liverpool by a mammoth nine points.
