Haaland rubbishes Mbappe comparisons

With many calling them the new Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland has now rubbished comparisons with Kylian Mbappe.

The Norwegian has established himself among the best footballers on the planet, with many believing he is set to dominate the sport for years to come.

The 23-year-old is largely considered a generational talent due to his incredible scoring record, boasting a lofty tally of 193 goals at club level despite being so early into his career.

Mbappe has also had a similarly sky-rocketing trajectory, having struck 244 times for AS Monaco and PSG at senior level so far at the age of 24.

As such, the pair have been touted as the next Messi and Ronaldo, with many hoping they will battle for supremacy for at least the next decade, just like the aforementioned icons.

However, Haaland has poured cold water on any suggestions that there may be a rivalry brewing between him and the French superstar like that between the Portugal and Argentina legends.

"That's what everyone thinks, but you have to emphasise just how crazy the things Messi and Cristiano have done," he told France Football.

"You also have to remember that they're still doing it, even if they're getting older. They're still fantastic players.

"But I never talk about myself being against other players, it's not my way of seeing things.

"I focus on myself, I only try to be better every day, to continue enjoying what I do and being the best version of myself."

Both Haaland and Mbappe are nominated for the 2023 Ballon d'Or award, with both yet to get their hands on the coveted prize.

This is Mbappe's sixth nomination, while Haaland has now been shortlisted for the third time in his career.
