'After that, we never saw game-time again'

In this edition of My Welcome To The League Moment, KickOff catches up with former African Wanderers and Orlando Pirates striker James Mothibi.

Mothibi tells a story of how his former coach at African Wanderers Johnny Ferreira once told him he was more suited on being a golfer and not a footballer.

"My welcome to the league moment came just before my first game against Kaizer Chiefs, I was still at African Wanderers," Mothibi tells KickOff.

"During the week we got a new coach in Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane, that was after Johnny Ferreira was sacked by African Wanderers.

"I never played under Johnny Ferreira, he didn't see me as a striker, he believed a lot in a striker called Tony Illodigwe.

"The body structure of Tony Illodigwe was huge compared to mine. Then Johnny said pointing at Illodigwe, 'This is how a striker should look like, you are not a striker, you must go and play golf.'

"But because of my big heart I decided to be patient, and then he was sacked, and my first game came against Kaizer Chiefs.

"My second game only came against Orlando Pirates at King Zwelithini Stadium, that's the game that opened the doors for me.

"Everything went well because I wanted to show the coaches that the body structure was not a problem. But even today I communicate everyday with coach Johnny Ferreira and I don't have an issue with him. And I have reminded him of the situation.

"I remember he used to coach us using a book, so one day me and Mshini [Welcome Mazibuko] stole that book, just to check if Ferreira was good without his trusted book.

"Let me just say, after that me and Mshini we never saw game-time again. That was until Mlungisi Ngubane took over."
