Maswanganyi's big penalty miss discussed

In reflecting on the Cape Town City v Orlando Pirates encounter, a former Kaizer Chiefs striker has suggested Patrick Maswanganyi should not have taken the penalty that was as a result of him being fouled in the box.

Pirates dominated proceedings in the Betway Premiership encounter on Wednesday but struggled to find the breakthrough as Muhsin Ertugral's men stood resolute in defence.

A big moment came in the second half after referee Sikhumbuzo Gasa pointed to the spot citing a foul on Maswanganyi by a City defender.

Initially, and perhaps as a ploy to confuse the opposition, Kabelo Dlamini took hold of the ball and appeared to be the man to take the spot-kick.

However, the attacking midfielder then abandoned the ball in favour of Deon Hotto, before 'Tito' finally came into the picture.

The Buccaneers fan-favourite managed to wrong-foot Darren Keet, but the effort came off the post before the veteran goalkeeper collected the rebound.

Consequently, opinions have been mixed on whether 'Tito' was the best candidate to take the penalty.

Former lethal striker Sidney Moshikaro, who turned out for the likes of Ria Stars, Dynamos and briefly for Chiefs, was in attendance at the game and has offered his perspective on the matter.

"Look, this thing is tricky. Was Mabasa on the field by that time? [Ed's note: Mabasa had already been replaced by Boitumelo Radiopane]. Normally, he's the one who takes penalties. Maybe they wanted to boost the confidence of 'Tito' because he was not playing well, to be honest. In the first half, he didn't play well. But it backfired," says the man from Mokopane, Limpopo, speaking to KickOff.com.

"According to me, either Mabasa or (Deon) Hotto should have taken it because they are good with penalties."

Moshikaro was asked if he thought Maswanganyi's performance dipped after the penalty miss.

"I think so, if you look at the reaction. After missing the penalty, he sat there on the penalty spot until somebody … (Paseka) Mako or someone … came and picked him up. That's a sign that he didn't take it well. When you miss a penalty, your reaction says a lot. He was broken."

The Soweto giants now turn focus to Champions League duties, where a win against CR Belouizdad at Orlando Stadium on Sunday will see them progress to the quarterfinals.

Kick-off is at 15:00.
