Man Utd snatch third straight Premier League win

Manchester United grabbed a third successive win in the Premier League after seeing off Aston Villa 2-1 at Villa Park on Sunday evening.

The knee injury to Lisandro Martinez opened a return for Harry Maguire as the Red Devils named just one change from the win over West Ham United last weekend.

Villa struggled on the ball early on and very nearly conceded after Bruno Fernandes robbed Douglas Luis off possession to set-up Rasmus Hojlund, but the Dane fluffed his lines.

Hojlund made up for the miss just around the 20th minute mark when he latched onto Maguire's knockdown following a corner and dispatched with relative ease.

Unai Emery's men looked to draw level five minutes later with a solid effort towards the top-corner by John McGinn after a smart move, but goalkeeper Andre Onana palmed away.

Onana made himself big again shortly before the closing quarter of the first half when he rushed out of his area to thwart Ollie Watkins pouncing off McGinn's lay-off.

United were urged to make a change ahead of the second period after an injury had Luke Shaw vacate the pitch to see Victor Lindelof step in from the dugout.

The Red Devils battled to get rhythm in the final third as the final pass towards Alejandro Garnacho, Fernandes and Hojlund lacked the necessary accuracy.

At the other end, Emery's troops showed courage and were rewarded in the 67th minute when United scrambled to clear a corner and allowed Luiz to guide the second ball into the roof of the net.

Garnacho looked to restore the lead with a burst of speed from out wide towards the centre of the box, but didn't cause goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez any difficulty.

Martinez was undone though after a first-time crosse by Diogo Dalot three minutes from time found substitute Scott McTominay, who nodded in emphatically.

United contained the final minutes and went on to grab their third successive win in the league to continue their top-four push.
