De Gea 'approached' by European giants after Man Utd exit

David de Gea has now reportedly been approached by one of Europe's biggest teams following his departure from Manchester United.

The Spaniard's 12-year spell in Manchester came to an end in July after the club decided against extending his contract.

De Gea was recently linked with a move to Real Madrid following Thibaut Courtois' injury, but the Madrid side has since opted to sign Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga on a season-long loan deal.

According to German publication Sport1, Bayern Munich are now in talks with the former Red Devils star with a view to signing him while Manuel Neuer continues to recover from a broken leg.

It is further claimed, however, that De Gea is hoping to return to Spain for the next stage of his career.

Arrizabalaga was also a target for the Bavarians before his move to Los Blancos was confirmed, seemingly forcing the Germans to consider signing De Gea instead.

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen confirmed over the weekend that the club were "very close" to signing Arrizabalaga, and that they are now looking to find a solution before the 1 September deadline.

"Yesterday or the day before yesterday, we were very close. We need a second goalkeeper. We would have wanted to present a new goalkeeper with Kepa today or tomorrow," Dreesen said, as per Goal.

"There are other options, but I don't want to say anything about that now. I am convinced that we will find a solution in this position by September 1st.

"But I would like to emphasise that, in Sven Ulreich, we have a great goalkeeper who is always there when he is needed."

While Bayern are clearly aware of the transfer window deadline, De Gea is a free agent and would thus still be eligible to sign for them after the window closes.
