Okocha: I'd cost R3bn in today's market

Nigeria icon Jay-Jay Okocha has made the outlandish claim that he would be worth R3 billion in the current transfer market.

Okocha is considered one of Africa's greatest exports following a dazzling 22-year career that saw him playing in three of Europe's top five leagues.

The tricky winger, who retired in 2012, famously played for Bolton Wanderers, Eintracht Frankfurt and Paris Saint-Germain, among other clubs.

He made 492 appearances in his professional career, and featured 75 times for Nigeria.

In fact, the former Super Eagles captain was once Africa's most expensive player ever, after joining PSG from Fenerbahce for a fee of €12.4 million (R249 million) in 1998.

This could go some way to explaining why Okocha feels he would cost as much as €150 million (R3 billion) in the transfer market if he played today.

"Maybe 1 billion should have been paid for me," the 49-year-old told Turkish newspaper Hurriyet.

"They paid £106 million (R2.4 billion) for their defensive midfielder [Enzo Fernandez], Chelsea. To a player from Portugal.

"I would have cost around €150 million.

"My assists, dribbles... World football started to pay a lot of money.

"Such would be the number of players of this quality."

It is Ivory Coast winger Nicolas Pepe, currently on loan at OGC Nice, who now has the prestige of being Africa's most expensive player ever  following his club-record €80 million (R1.6 billion) move to Arsenal from LOSC Lille in 2019.
