Manchester United failed to secure top spot in their UEFA Europa League group despite defeating Real Sociedad 1-0 on Thursday night.
Victor Lindelof and Alejandro Garnacho earned recalls for United, while Donny van de Beek got his first start for this group stage-deciding match.
Garnacho was causing all the early problems and he made the breakthrough with 17 minutes played where he broke free on the left and sent a fine finish into the top corner after being played in by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 18-year-old Garnacho looked for a second goal a little to the half-hour mark when he pulled a cutback from a tight angle in the danger area and went wide of the far corner.
United should've had a second goal in the last four minutes of the half through Ronaldo, who had pounced on a defensive lapse, but dinked over with the goal in plain sight.
The Erreala bounced back seconds apart and had David De Gea at full stretch from a first-time effort by Andoni Gorosabel while Pablo Marin was smothered on the follow-up too.
Sociedad provided a strong start after halftime with a clever attempt on the edge of the area by Mikel Merino from a corner-kick flying narrowly beyond target.
The Red Devils went to the bench 12 minutes after the break and in came Marcus Rashford for van de Beek before Lindelof was withdrawn for Scott McTominay.
Imanol Alguacil's men continued piling forward around the final 15 minutes and nearly pulled level from a snap shot by Ander Guevara following McTominay's loose ball, but De Gea collected.
United pushed for a second goal in added time though Sociedad sat deep and soaked up the pressure, as the Red Devils emerged victors but missed out on top spot in the group.
