Man Utd leave it late to sink Nicosia in Europa

Manchester United needed a late strike from Scott McTominay to defeat Omonia Nicosia 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo, who came off the bench to score the winner against Everton, started up top while Fred and Tyrell Malacia were also recalled by Erik ten Hag.

A fast start from the Red Devils followed where Marcus Rashford met a short-corner from Bruno Fernandes, cut an opening and forced a fine stop from goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.

United continued to go on the front-foot midway in the first half after Fernandes slipped Rashford in-behind following a loose pass by Ronaldo, but Uzoho once again parried.

Omonia remained under pressure 12 minutes to halftime as a scorching strike from 25-yards out by Carlos Casemiro came off the crossbar with Uzoho scrambling to parry.

Uzoho continued to frustrate the host two minutes in the second half when he made a double save to deny close-range attempts from Rashford and Antony before parrying Malacia seconds apart.

Manchester still had the lion share of chances a little later as Rashford latched onto a long ball to go clear only to flash well wide, with Luke Shaw on for Malacia and Jadon Sancho for Antony.

The Red Devils remained in the ascendancy with 20 minutes to go and saw Ronaldo ran in from a tight angle and forced a save from Uzoho with a first-time shot at the near post.

The Nigerian goalkeeper produced another solid stop in the final minutes through a low diving save off substitute McTominay's rasping shot from outside the area.

The Nigerian international goalkeeper was finally beaten two minutes in added time as McTominay brought a low cross from Sancho under control in the area and drilled home.

At the end, the Red Devils ran down the closing seconds and bagged the win to edge closer to the knockout stages of the Europa League.
