UEFA Champions League wrap

Chelsea edged closer to securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after beating Lille 2-0 in the first leg of their last 16 tie at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues manager Thomas Tuchel dropped Romelu Lukaku to the bench, in favour of a flexible front three of Christian Pulisic, Kai Havertz and Hakim Ziyech.

Chelsea had a perfect start after Havertz gave them the lead in the eighth minute with a downward header that bounced into top corner, unmarked in the box after a lovely cross by Ziyech.

Lille had a positive response to going a goal down, as they pressed Tuchel's charges high and did not give them time to combine going forward but they lacked the cutting edge in front of goal.

The game opened up in the early stages of the second stanza and Pulisic gave Chelsea a two-goal lead just after the hour-mark with a strike over goalkeeper Leo Jardim after a through ball by N'Golo Kante.

Tuchel's men defended well in the closing stages to secure victory by two goals and a cleansheet.

Here are the best-paid players in this season's Champions League

Neither Villarreal nor Juventus gained any advantage in the first-leg of the last 16 tie after a 1-1 draw at Estadio de la Ceramica.

Bianconeri were without the injured Paulo Dybala, as they recalled Weston McKennie in his place while Unai Emery brought back the bulk of his regulars who were rested in the win over Granada, including the likes of Alberto Moreno and Samuel Chukwueze.

The visitors had a dream start after going ahead within the first minute thanks to a clinical strike across goal by Dusan Vlahovic after Danilo won possession high up the field and chipped a through ball over the defence.

The Yellow Submarine were unlucky not to find the equaliser in the early stages, as Giovani Lo Celso was denied by the post with a strike in the box and Arnaut Danjuma forced a great reflex save from goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with an audacious backheel.

Emery's charges had renewed energy from the half-time break and Dani Pajero eventually found the equaliser in the 66th minute with a first-time strike in the box after a teasing cross by Etienne Capoue.

Vlahovic almost snatched the winner for Massimiliano Allegri's men in the last five minutes with a low strike on the edge of the box that required a great save from shor-stopper Geronimo Rulli.
