Buffon targets maiden UCL crown

The 37-year-old gloveman has won seven Serie A titles with the Bianconeri, as well as the 2006 World Cup with the Italian national team, yet has never lifted the European Cup, coming closest in 2003 when Juventus lost the Final on penalties to fellow Italian club AC Milan.

That was the last time the Old Lady reached the last four of the competition, and Buffon is hoping this season is the year he finally lays his hands on the ‘Big Ears’.

"The Champions League is a trophy I've never lifted and one I'd like to as soon as possible,” he told reporters. “A team's success comes around through the squad, club and backroom staff. The coach has done really well to come in and immediately get on the same wavelength as us."

Juve hold a 1-0 lead following their first leg home victory over Monaco last week, and Buffon knows it will be a difficult task against the French side, yet hopes his side will be able to prove their worth among the continent’s best teams.

"Monaco have what it takes to try and overturn the result,” he said. “They are a strong team but we are also aware of our qualities.

"It is a very important game for the club as a whole and the chance to show we are back among Europe's finest.”

Kickoff in France is scheduled for 20:45 this evening.
