Cristiano Ronaldo nets hattrick as Juventus thrash Cagliari to move top of Serie A

Cristiano Ronaldo netted his first Serie A hattrick as Juventus kept the pace with Inter within the thrilling 2019/20 title race.

After a goalless first-half against the high-flying Cagliari, the flood gates opened in the second 45 minutes - starting with Ronaldo's opener.

The veteran forward stole the ball off centre-back Sebastian Walukiewicz before rounding goalkeeper Robin Olsen quickly after the restart.

The sixth-placed side looked shell-shocked and confidence built from the impressive opening half seemed to evaporate at the Allianz Stadium.

Ronaldo's second came from the spot just after the hour mark, before substitute Gonzalo Higuain added a third a minute before the Portugal captain completed his treble.

Victory for Maurizio Sarri's men temporarily lifted them to first place ahead of Antonio Conte's side, who then went back to the top of the league with an impressive win over Napoli on Monday evening.

Meanwhile, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner took his personal tally to 13 goals in 14 league games for the 2019/20 season after his 56th career hattrick.
