Man Utd 'facing' huge Onana blow

Manchester United could reportedly be in for a huge blow regarding their new goalkeeper Andre Onana.

The Red Devils spent handsomely to sign the Cameroonian shot-stopper last month, splashing a whopping €52.5 million (R1 billion) on the player to make him not only their most expensive goalkeeper of all time, but Africa's too.

Some feel the 27-year-old has been one of the side's bright sparks so far this season following an impressive Premier League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in which he kept a clean sheet.

Among the qualities appreciated by his manager Erik ten Hag is said to be Onana's ability with the ball at his feet, which fits perfectly with the coach's style of play that requires playing out from the back.

However, reports in the former Ajax Amsterdam star's home country now suggest that United face the risk of losing the shot-stopper during a crucial part of the 2023/24 season.

According to Foot Azimuts, Onana is in talks to return to the Cameroon national team after he announced his retirement from international duty during the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the country's government now said to have intervened to convince him to rescind his retirement decision.

As a result, the Red Devils now face the prospect of losing Onana when the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations rolls around in January should the Indomitable Lions qualify.

It is further claimed that he if reverses his retirement decision, which he took after falling out with current Cameroon boss Rigobert Song at the global showpiece in Qatar, he could even feature for the team in the September international break, when they take on Burundi in a crucial AFCON qualifier.

According to an unnamed source close to Onana, talks have been underway for months.

"The love he has above all for his country will probably lead him to accept this outstretched hand from the government," he said.
