Trophee des Champions match report Paris Saint-Germain v Nantes 31 July 2022

Paris Saint-Germain secured their first trophy for the 2022/2023 season after defeating Nantes 4-0 in the Trophee des Champions on Sunday night.

Lionel Messi and Neymar Junior both started, but Kylian Mbappe missed out through suspension, as PSG started life with new man Christophe Galtier following Maurico Pochettino's dismissal.

Messi didn't take long to get comfortable as the Argentine star played in Vitor Ferreira who then squared for Achraf Hakimi to get one in, but goalkeeper Alban Lafont blocked after five minutes.

The opening exchanges continued to hold ground for the Ligue 1 champions and they duly went ahead midway in when Messi pounced off a nick in the area and rounded Lafont for a calm finish.

Nantes weren't out of the woods but struggled to get ahead of their counterparts and at that almost conceded a second through Messi from a ball by Nuno Mendes.

PSG did however extend their tally on the stroke of halftime after a free-kick on the edge of the area saw Neymar step up and curl into the near corner of the net.

Following an uninspired first half, Nantes looked to get back minutes after the break as Evvan Guessand nodded a telling supply in the area over target.

The Parisans bagged a third goal 12 minutes in the second half when Sergio Ramos back-heeled the ball past Lafont after a goal-mouth scramble.

With the tie in sight, Galtier installed a pair of changes towards the last 10 minutes in Danilo Pereira for Vitor and sacrificed Mendes for Juan Bernat.

The additions didn't hinder PSG as they secured a fourth goal from the spot on 82 minutes through a bottom-corner finish from Neymar after Jean-Charles Castelleto conceded a foul and was therefore dismissed.

PSG targeted a fifth with two minutes to go off a move from Messi following a dink by Neymar, but Lafont rescued and saw the champions to a 4-0 triumph.
