Ligue 1 match report AS Monaco v Olympique Lyon

Ten-man Monaco went down 3-0 to Olympique Lyon in their Ligue 1 season-opener on Friday evening.

The hosts give a first senior start to South Africa's Lyle Foster up top, with Cesc Fabregas in midfield while Memphis Depay led the visitors charge.

Lyon though drew first blood on five minutes when Moussa Dembele outjumped the defence to head home Bertrand Traore's cross.

Whilst preparing a come back, Monaco were dealt a blow on the half-hour mark with star midfielder Fabregas send for an early shower.

This played straight into Lyon's hands, who seized initiative with a second on 36 minutes through Depay who fired into an empty net from outside the box.

The visitors pushed for more towards the break, but Depay and Leo Dubois failed to make the net bulge.

At the resumption, Gabriel Boschilla replaced Foster up front as the first substitution of the match took place.

Monaco nearly cut the deficit on 61 minutes, but Gelson Martins failed to get the better of Anthony Lopes from a Benjamin Henrichs assist.

The away side on the other hand, looked to use their man advantage to their effect but despite their best efforts, failed to succeed.

Lyon completed the victory in the last ten minutes when Lucas Tousart combined with Thiago Mendes to finish from point-blank range.

With just one match played, the victory puts Lyon at the top of the table while Monaco drop down to the basement.
