Eto's Fecafoot sanctions 5-year ban on ex-teammate

Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) is said to have imposed a strict five-year ban on a former player who was tipped to organisation’s next presidential elections .

Eto'o’s post-playing career has seemingly been marred by controversy, with the former striker involved in various disputes with organisations and individuals.

One of his most bitterly contested conflicts is with his former Cameroon national team colleague, Geremi Njitap.

Tensions came to a head between the two during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

Eto'o and Njitap were reportedly involved in a dressing-room altercation that nearly escalated into a physical confrontation, before Njitap was forcefully removed from the locker room.

The clash is believed to have been sparked by Njitap’s public criticism of Fecafoot — a move said to have soured relations between him and Eto'o.

The tensions between the pair have never been resolved, and it has since been revealed that Eto'o has used his influence to impose a five-year ban on Njitap from all football activities in Cameroon.

Njitap previously served on Fecafoot’s executive committee, and reports in Cameroon suggest he was a potential candidate for the organisation’s next presidential elections.

According to Camfoot, the ban on Njitap has been perceived as a power move by those close to the situation.

Cameroonian sports media personality Brice Hervé Mvogo told the publication: "I read this decision with a smile on my face. Njitap supported Eto’o during the elections. He rallied stakeholders around his candidacy at the expense of Denis Onana.

"Today, Synafoc is no longer a member of the General Assembly. And Njitap has been suspended for five years for reasons that are difficult to understand.

"It’s a life lesson — one must be careful about whom to support. President Eto’o cannot allow such a decision to stand. This is another dark mark on his record."
