Status at stake: Bumpy pitch, inexperience, heartbreak

Word from the Cape Town City bench has come through explaining the side's defensive strategy during the second half of their PSL play-offs encounter against Casric Stars on Wednesday.

Despite dominating the first half, where they took the lead through Prins Tjiueza, City found themselves under pressure after half-time, making it difficult for them to escape their own half.

The match ended 1-1 after the home side were awarded a late penalty, converted by Sphamandla Mlilo in the seventh minute of added time.

All the sides participating in the relegation/promotion play-offs are on two points with two matches remaining for all.

"We will accept the draw, says assistant coach Roger De Sa, letting off a sigh.

"In the second half, they caught us off-guard with their long balls and direct style of play, but that’s how they typically play, and we should have held our ground.

"I’ve observed Casric play, they send everything into the box, and the field at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium is bumpy, which is not conducive to good football.

"Our defensive approach in the second half depended on our squad's condition. When players started getting injured, we had to bring in some youngsters.

"When you're being pinned back like that, and the grass is uneven, it becomes tough. Unless we resort to playing long balls ourselves, and unfortunately, our players are not suited for that style. Sometimes, that’s how it goes," he continues.

The former Orlando Pirates head coach is remaining upbeat, though, with the Citizens having their fate in their own hands.

"It looks like we’re all even now, everyone has played two games and is on the same points. The final two games will be crucial for all teams.

"We have to stay positive and believe that we can succeed. All the signs indicate that we can do it, especially since our last game will be at home. Hopefully we’ll be ready for it, and the players will rise to the occasion."
