Sekhukhune’s case with Cardoso

Daniel Cardoso will be amongst the last of those born in the 80s surviving in the Betway Premiership for another season.

Cardoso will turn 37 on his next birthday and has already done 13 years of service in the top tier of South African football having started out at Free State Stars before spending seven years at Kaizer Chiefs.

His game has been defined by honesty in the effort he puts, thrice accomplishing the high mark of playing all 30 games in the league.

In the 2017/18 season at Chiefs, he was on the field for all 30, though he didn’t start the first two league games of that campaign.

Cardoso was then on the field for every minute in the 2019/20 season.

A yellow card suspension then meant he missed out on that feat the following season, but he was back on familiar territory in the 2022/23 campaign at Sekhukhune United.

He has kept the momentum of playing regularly throughout all his time with Babina Noko.

The reward has been that he has gone into agreement with Sekhukhune for a one-year contract taking him to June 2026.

This extension will pave way for his integration into the club’s technical team at the end of four years of service to the club.

His minutes in the new season are expected to dwindle.

Cardoso is the last of the few players born in the '80s still having playing contracts in the Betway Premiership in a list headlined by veteran goalkeeper Denis Onyango.
