Arsenal overtake Man City with 5-0 thrashing

Eddie Nketiah netted a hat-trick to inspire Arsenal to a 5-0 thrashing of Sheffield United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Surprisingly Arsenal named captain Martin Odegaard, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Jorginho and Gabriel Jesus on the bench from their win at Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League in midweek.

Arsenal were in the lead three minutes to the half-hour mark when Eddie Nketiah worked his way out of a challenge in the area and finished off Declan Rice's delivery.

With the host in front, Sheffield battled to have any sort of momentum though got a promising move later on from a long pass by Luke Thomas to Ben Slimane but nothing came of it.

Arteta's men looked keen to double their lead before the break with Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe linking up to set Gabriel Martinelli in on goal but Wes Foderingham palmed.

The Gunners extended their advantage five minutes in the second half as Nketiah pounced on a loose ball after Foderingham failed to deal with a corner and tucked in to nab a brace.

Nketiah continued to haunt the Blades and snatched a hat-trick eight minutes later when he directed a cutback from Smith Rowe beyond the outstretching gloves of Foderingham.

Arteta decided to go for a double change midway in the second stanza as Leandro Trossard came on for Martinelli before Ben White was hauled out to see Tomiyasu enter.

The substitutes didn't take long to impact proceedings when Trossard got wide to deliver a teasing ball to the cusp of the box for Tomiyasu, who snapped wide.

Arsenal won a penalty in the last five minutes after Fabio Vieira went down in the box, and needed a pitch-side review to confirm the spot-kick which the player in question tucked in to make it four.

Tomiyasu put the icing on the cake in added time as he slotted in a loose ball from a corner and saw the Gunners returned to winning ways.
