Former Manchester United midfielder Ronnie Wallwork avoids jail-time for assault

Former Manchester United midfielder Ronnie Wallwork, who was previously 'banned for life' for assaulting a referee in Belgium, has once again found himself on the wrong side of the law.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Wallwork was handed an 18-month suspended prison sentence on Wednesday after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm following an assault on an acquaintance in a bar in December 2019, which left the victim with a fractured eye socket.

The 43-year-old, who is reported to have two previous convictions to his name, including the handling of stolen motor vehicles, was also ordered to partake in 20 days of rehabilitation activity and 200 hours of unpaid work, while also being liable to the victim for £500 (around R10 000) in damages.

The incident is said to have stemmed from an argument between the pair, who knew each other prior to the attack, in which the victim allegedly mocked Wallwork's white sneakers, promoting the assault from the former England youth international and one of his friends, who was received a similar sentence.

Wallwork, who made nearly 100 Premier League appearances across spells with United and West Bromwich Albion, has a previous caution for battery and two prior convictions and was also banned for life from football in 1999 following an alleged assault on a Belgian referee during a loan spell at Royal Antwerp.

That ban was reduced, however, and he ultimately went on to enjoy subsequent spells in England's lower leagues with the likes of Bradford City, Barnsley, Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday, among others.
