Jurgen Klopp tips Mario Gotze to rebuild his career after Borussia Dortmund exit

Gotze, who celebrated his 28th birthday on Monday, is set to leave his boyhood club for the second time after they confirmed his contract will not be renewed at the end of the season.

It marks the end of a disappointing homecoming, as the return from Bayern Munich was seen as the potential catalyst to reinvigorate the promised superstar status which reached its pinnacle with the 2014 FFA World Cup winning-goal.

Speaking to Sky Deutschland, Klopp, who's 'in regular' contact with Gotze and gave him his first debut in 2009 feels it's not the beginning of the end - despite him being restricted to just five starts in the 2019/20 Bundesliga season.

"Everyone in the business knew that his contract was expiring," Klopp said. "If things have not been settled a year in advance, there are some indications that it is coming to an end.

"Mario will probably need a few games in a row. He needs a club that gives him the feeling that he doesn't have to change the world in every game."

Klopp went on to suggest that the strength of Dortmund's playing squad, which doesn't offer room for a traditional number 10 was the major factor to his dramatic decline in influence with BVB.

"Gotze has to just play normally and then play again and play again. Then I think we'll see the old Mario Gotze again," the Reds boss explained.

"That is obviously not possible in Dortmund at the moment with the quality that they have in the offensive area. It makes total sense that Mario leaves the club. I couldn't wish him more luck, to be honest.

"I think he is an exceptional player and also an exceptional character. I like him very much and wish him all the best."

The talented playmaker has scored 45 goals and registered 61 assists in 219 games over the two separate stints at the Signal Iduna Park.
