Golden Shoe race back on after Bundesliga return

With the Bundesliga set to return later this month, Robert Lewandowski could end Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's hold of the European Golden Shoe, while Kylian Mbappe is no longer in the running.

The Bundesliga is set to return during the second half of May following the coronavirus-enforced suspension of the league, placing leading goalscorer Robert Lewandowski in pole position to end Messi and Ronaldo's stranglehold of the European Golden Shoe.

The Bayern Munich hitman has scored 25 Bundesliga goals this season, and is currently the second-highest goalscorer across Europe's major leagues, with Lazio's Ciro Immobile (27 strikes) the only player ahead of him in the race for the coveted award.

Four-time winner Ronaldo trails in third place with 21 league goals for Juventus, but both he and Immobile find themselves at a disadvantage given the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the completion of the 2019/20 Serie A campaign.

The Italy-based pair could also still be overtaken by RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner and Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, both of whom are level on co-efficient points with the Portugal superstar for the season.

Lionel Messi and Jamie Vardy are further behind with 19 league goals each, while Kylian Mbappe and Wissam Ben Yedder (18 strikes each) have effectively been ruled out of the running after the Ligue 1 campaign was brought to a premature end.

Former Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang round out the top 10 at present but neither are likely to haul in the likes of Immobile and Lewandowski before the end of the season.
