FIFA World Cup record goalscorer lands high-profile job

Ahead of the Bundesliga's imminent return, Bayern Munich have added one of Germany's greatest-ever players to their new-look technical team in what promises to be an exciting era ahead for the reigning champions.

On Wednesday afternoon, Bayern announced that club legend Miroslav Klose has been appointed as manager Hansi Flick's new assistant for next season, while current assistant coach Danny Rohl's deal has also been extended until 2023.

"We are very happy that Miro has decided to take this step from the FC Bayern Campus to the first team. I am convinced that our strikers, in particular, will benefit from him being there as a coach. Miro was also Hansi Flick's preferred candidate," an official statement on the club's official website said.

The backroom changes come just over a month after Flick was appointed as the club's permanent manager, with the 55-year-old having previously held the role on an interim basis following the sacking of former boss Niko Kovac in November last year.

Klose, who is the leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup history with 16 strikes to his name, netted 53 times in 149 appearances for Bayern during his playing career before later taking up a role in the club's youth structures at U17 level.

The appointment comes on the same day the Bundesliga confirmed the return of football activities in the country, with the first set of fixtures following the coronavirus-enforced break to be played on the weekend of 16-17 May.
