Bundesliga match report Borussia Dortmund v Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table to seven points with a 1-0 win over second-place Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday evening.

Jadon Sancho and Axel Witsel were left on the Dortmund bench, as Bayern missed the services of Thiago Alcantara through a knock.

A frantic opening almost had Dortmund ahead, but quick thinking from Jerome Boateng saw Thorgan Hazard's effort cleared off the line.

Bayern were then denied the breakthrough in similar fashion 19 minutes in as Lukasz Piszczek recovered quickly to hoof Serge Gnabry's rasping shot off the goal-line.

The first save of the match needed Roman Burki standing firm to parry Kingsley Coman's attempt following a free-flowing move involving Thomas Muller moments later.

First blood eventually went to the visitors three minutes to halftime after Joshua Kimmich retrieved possession, spotted Burki off his line and lobbed the Dortmund shot-stopper.

A double change from Dortmund following the break resulted in the arrival of Sancho and former Liverpool man Emre Can, with Thomas Delaney and Julian Brandt sacrificed.

Raphael Guerreiro came close to continuing his scoring run of form with a free-kick a little later, but Neuer quickly thwarted the danger to keep the Bavarians in control.

Action shifted immediately, as Alphonso Davies and Muller spearheaded a counter-attack which inadvertently found Ivan Perisic who blazed over from 25-yards.

Mario Gotze, formerly of Bayern, came on for Piszczek in the last nine minutes in the attempt to grab an equaliser, but Lewandowski went close moments later after hitting the post with a low curler.

Bayern remained in control following the final minutes amidst persistent pressure and were able to hold out for the win to move open a seven-point lead over Dortmund.
