Uganda head coach Paul Put has explained why Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango was called-up despite retiring from international football four years ago.
Onyango ended his international career with Cranes in 2021 after the team failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations.

However, Put shocked the Ugandan football fertility when the 40-year-old was named in the squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Mozambique and Somaila.
“We have been struggling with goalkeeping options after Watenga’s injury, so we decided to call Onyango.
"He also assisted the CHAN team, and that’s when I got to know him better.
"He is disciplined, mature, and experienced, and I believe he will play a key role in this important qualification campaign."
Put also called up Richards Bay shot-stopper Salim Magoola for the September fixtures.
