The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially announced that there will be a big increase in the prize money for the winner of the 2022 TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Algeria.
The African tournament got underway on 13 January, with hosts Algeria playing and beating Libya 1-0 in the opening tie.
After a gruelling and action-packed group stage, the tournament is now in the quarter-final round.

African heavyweights Cameroon and Mali were two surprise exits after the group stage.
With the two continental giants out, this CHAN tournament will have a new winner as all the previous ones have been eliminated.
As the competition reaches its final stages, CAF has now announced, via its official website, that the winner of this year's edition will receive $2 million (R34 million).
This is a big increase on what the previous champions, Morocco, had received $1.25 million (R21.5 million) in 2020.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe also confirmed that the total prize money allocated for the tournament has been increased to $7.9 million (R136 million) from the $5.4 million (R92 million) that all the participating teams received in the 2020 CHAN.
According to AllAfrica, the team who loses the final will get $800 000 (R13.7 million), while the third- and fourth-placed teams will each receive $500 000 (R8.6 million).
The final is set to take place on 4 February at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers.
