The president of the Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has refused to confirm or deny whether Benni McCarthy’s contract with the national team is worth a reported Ksh8 million (R1.1 million) per month.
McCarthy’s appointment as head coach of the Kenya national team in March came as something of a surprise, as the South African tactician had just completed a stint at Manchester United as strikers coach.

In Kenya, his arrival was widely regarded as a high-profile acquisition, given McCarthy’s credentials as both a coach and a former player.
He succeeded Engin Firat, who resigned from the role citing unpaid wages, among other issues.
Nevertheless, the FKF stated that concerns over salary payments would not be a problem during McCarthy’s tenure — although they declined to disclose how much the former Bafana Bafana star is earning.
With reports in Kenya claiming McCarthy is on a contract worth Ksh8 million (R1.1 million), FKF president Hussein Mohammed said the details could only be revealed with the coach’s consent.
“Benni McCarthy’s term is up to 2027, immediately after AFCON. He is employed like any other employee and his terms of payment are personal to him. If we get his consent, we can discuss the terms of his pay, it should not be a big issue,” Mohammed said on Citizen TV.
“I would rather it came from him so that he clarifies because it is a private matter. It is not the figures that have been thrown around and it would be important that it comes from him so that he feels comfortable with that particular agenda.
“We have agreed within the contract that we have to give each other notice if we want him to leave and if he wants also to leave the terms are very clear, we have to give a period of time. It is a short period, maybe two to three months and just say we want to part ways and we have a very clear exit plan.”
