Ex-Ahly star: I loved Pitso very much

A former Al Ahly star has now revealed that he loved playing under Pitso Mosimane so much that he wanted to reverse his decision to leave the club.

Egypt icon Ahmed Fathi has now revealed he considered staying at Al Ahly following Mosimane's arrival as manager in October 2020.

Fathi parted ways with the Red Devils a month after the South African coach's appointment, but the veteran defender has explained that he almost changed his mind.

"My decision to leave Al Ahly was not easy at all, and before leaving Al Ahly, I thought for a whole year before moving to Pyramids," the 39-year-old said on Egyptian TV show Al-Koora with Fayek this week, according to El Captain Dostor.

"One of the reasons for my departure from Al Ahly is that I did not play continuously in the recent period, when the Swiss Rene Weiler took over, and Pyramids requested to join me for 15 million pounds (about R5.6 million).

"I loved Pitso Mosimane very much, and I thought about reversing my decision to leave Al Ahly because of the South African."

He added: "Captain Sayed Abdel Hafeez, director of football at Al Ahly Club at the time, agreed with me to renew the contract in January, but that did not happen.

"Al Ahly was very attached to me, but in the end there was no chance for me to continue, and I made my decision to leave.

"It never happened that I asked for 11 million pounds (R4.1 million) per season, and to be equal to Walid Soliman, in order to renew before leaving Al Ahly."

Fathi, who has made more than 130 appearances for the Egypt national team, played five matches under Mosimane, and was even given the armband by the coach in his last two games at the club, before he joined Pyramids as a free agent.
