Bafana's next opponents respond to crazy unpaid wages claims

Bafana Bafana's next opponents have now addressed claims that they have not paid their players' bonuses and allowances after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has refuted claims suggesting the Super Eagles were not paid what was promised to them for their performance at AFCON, where they finished as runners-up.

This comes after a "false" report circulated online, stating that the squad has 25 matches in outstanding payouts, dating back to previous years.

A statement on the NFF's official website reads: "The report is absolutely false, in every ramification, and we challenge the owner of the website and writer to come forward with proof of the claims.

"We want him to name the players who spoke to him, because these are all tissues of lies.

"Players and officials of the Super Eagles have been paid for all matches played at the AFCON, yet he claimed the team was paid for only three matches.

"His outlandish claim of the team being owed for 25 matches is the biggest lie ever concocted by any writer."

A senior national team player told Nff.com: "This story is a shame. No player of the Super Eagles spoke to the writer. It is all pure fabrication."

Another prominent Super Eagles official added: "The story is absolute bunkum. People should make an effort to verify whatever they hear from anywhere before going to the press. It is clear that this writer did not even hear anything; he simply brought forth something from his own imagination."

Nigeria's immediate attention will be on their next match, a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against South Africa on Friday, 7 June.

The west African giants will be looking to make a return to the World Cup after their failure to qualify for the 2022 tournament in Qatar, which marked the first time in 16 years that they had missed the global showpiece.

It was also recently confirmed that the Super Eagles will be without their lead striker Victor Osimhen and winger Nathan Tella, who recently won a league and cup double with Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, for the their matches against Bafana and Benin, with the latter having left the national team camp for "family reasons".
