6 Bizarre awards in African football - Sundowns' Kekana 5GB data as TKO prize included

From Hlompho Kekana's iconic five gig data package to receiving a live chicken, here are six of the strangest awards in football history.

Back in October 2014, the Telkom Knock Out tournament went viral for it's Man of the Match award with an image of Kekana looking at his five-gigabyte prize spreading like wildfire.

The prize valued at approximately R300 at the time raised eyebrows with Kaizer Chiefs defender Kgotso Moleko and then Orlando Pirates' wing-back Patrick Phungwayo a few of the unfortunate recipients.

However, their rewards are seemingly not the most bizarre to surface in Africa as the Kenya Premier League player of the Month was pictured at his High School this week after scoring five goals in December.

Amongst several excited school friends, the promising striker earned a trophy and a flat-screen television for his efforts.

In Malawi, things got a bit more peculiar with a Hassan Kajoke awarded a live chicken for his performance in a 5-0 win for Nyassa Big Bullets.

It was later explained that the chicken came directly from the club's passionate supporters and not from an official sponsor.

"Every winning game, players are motivated with cash, kitchenware, boots, chicken, and soft drinks just to mention a few from supporters," the club stated at the time.

"Likewise, if the team is not doing well, our audacity to punish players in many ways. A few weeks ago, the players were forced by fans not to use the team bus when the team draw against a team that was considered an underdog."
