Wydad's pursuit of Downs' Lorch hits financial snag after his CWC showings?

Wydad Athletic Club’s hopes of securing South African star Thembinkosi Lorch on a permanent deal from Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly encountered a setback.

Lorch joined the Moroccan giants in January from the Brazilians, having been deemed surplus to requirements by new Downs coach Miguel Cardoso.

Since his arrival, the former Orlando Pirates midfielder has proven his value, quickly becoming a fan favourite, thanks to his flair, consistency, and work ethic—key traits in Wydad's ongoing rebuild.

Before the end of the 2024/25 season, Wydad head coach Amine Benhachem publicly expressed his desire to keep Nyoso, as Lorch is known, permanently, with early indications suggesting a deal was likely.

However, the situation shifted dramatically following Lorch’s stellar performances at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, currently underway in the United States.

Although Wydad have since been eliminated from the tournament, Lorch made a strong impression, shining against Manchester City in their opener and grabbing headlines with a goal and standout display against Juventus.

In light of these performances, reports suggest Sundowns have significantly increased their asking price. Initially valuing Lorch at around €500,000 (approximately R10 million), the Tshwane-based club is now believed to be demanding €1 million (approximately R20 million).

Now, according to Moroccan publication Sport.Al3OMK, Wydad considers the revised fee excessive, particularly amid their ongoing financial constraints.

While the club remains keen to retain Lorch’s services, the reports suggest Wydad may struggle to meet Sundowns’ new demands.

Unless both parties reach an aggrement soon over Lorch's situation, Wydad could be forced to part ways with one of their standout loan performers at the end of the month.
