'Koller is a star killer, he caused Al Ahly to lose Tau'

A former Al Ahly star has accused the club’s departed manager of being a “star killer” who was responsible for the exits of Percy Tau and others.

It’s no secret that Koller’s relationship with Tau deteriorated, with many journalists and football experts in Egypt publicly claiming that tensions between the two were the key reason behind the South African’s departure in January 2025.

Now, four months after Tau left Al Ahly for Qatar SC, the Egyptian giants have officially parted ways with Koller following their CAF Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns last week.

Despite winning nearly a dozen trophies, Koller’s dismissal is justified, according to former Al Ahly player Reda Abdel Aal.

In an interview with Sada El Balad, Abdel Aal said: “His [Koller] departure was deserved. Koller didn’t offer any real football with the team and was a star killer.

“He caused Al Ahly to lose many talented players like Ahmed Kendouci, Reda Slim, Percy Tau, and Dieng. Despite winning 11 titles, he never delivered football that matched Al Ahly’s standards.”

Abdel Aal also spoke about Pyramids FC’s chances of winning the Champions League against Mamelodi Sundowns.

He added: "I expect Pyramids to beat Sundowns if they can secure a positive result in the first leg in South Africa.”
